How research impacted our ideas

Narrative:
Our film will follow Todorov's famous classic hollywood narrative, equilibrium-disequilibrium-new equilibrium, however our trailer will not. We want our trailer to start with equilibrium and end with unresolved disequilibrium. This will end the trailer on a cliff hanger, to help draw in the audience.

Representations:
Stereo-typically girls are represented in two groups when considering horror films. Dumb blondes and smart brunettes. The dumb blonde will often die, because they will be portrayed as naive and do not conform to traditional ways of society. Whereas the brunettes will appear innocent and observant, and because of this often survive.
In our film the victim is blonde, and the villain is a brunette. Therefore this would connote that the victim is going to die.

Genre/DISTINCT:
Setting: Watching several horror trailers you soon begin to find themes of settings. They have to be dark, derelict, and dangerous. Therefore we shot scenes of of trailer in a forest, and also created a scene to appear as though our victim was locked in a dark cellar/ rundown warehouse.

Technical code: Camerawork is very important. It helps to transfer mindsets and power shift between characters. Therefore we have used high angles to show how powerless the victim is. Closeups create intimate shots where you as a voyeur are placed directly with the character feeling the same emotion. Editing helps to build atmosphere. We created edited our footage so that clips became shorter and quicker this helped to build up pace and show the tense and dangerous situations.

Iconography: We will use low key lighting, and possibly motivated lighting in order to create dark scenes. Alongside this the villain will be seen with weapons, such as a knife. This is to show the split between good/bad. This is commonly used within horror films. We will also have our villain wearing an expressionless mask. This will connote that the villain is not to be trusted and that she holds no remorse.

Themes: Our theme will be good V evil, or you could even call it normal V insane. We will have an innocent young girl, being preyed on by no reason at all. The villain will be a fellow student who has developed a dangerous fixation with the victim. Therefore the film will be based around who will survive, good or evil.

Audiences and institutions:
From the audience research we conducted about horror films, we found that the most popular horror genre is psychological. This is why we have based our film on a psychologically unstable stalker. We also found that people will often expect to see gore in a horror film, therefore we will incorporate weapons such as a knife and/or rope into the trailer.
The women in black was a huge success. Why? they had a significantly large, and widespread ad campaign. They featured on the radio, magazine covers, billboards, television, you name it. Therefore encouraged by this we will produce our very own trailer, poster and magazine cover to help promote our film release.
