A film distributer can either be a whole company or a
person, with their sole purpose being to market and advertise a film. The
products that I have created to advertise my film: trailer, poster and magazine
cover are the same products that professional film distributers would use to promote
their films. However their promotional techniques will be extremely broader and
will reach a larger audience. Their film trailers will be in cinemas, on
television, the internet or even outdoors advertisement. Alongside this their
film posters will be on billboards, in magazines and other flyers or methods of
materialistic advertisement. Finally their magazine cover will feature on a
high demand and well known magazine cover, in order to be delivered around the
country or world to almost every news agent store.
It is not easy to get your film on the front page of a magazine and distributer’s know it. It is incredibly important that they carry out thorough audience research. They need to find a huge target audience and specific demographic groups in order to convince magazine companies that their film will help up sell their magazine.
Being on the front page of a magazine will significantly help the film campaign because people can still look at it even if they do not buy it. Therefore it will reach a very large audience, which is the main idea of advertising. The amount spent on advertising will differ depending on their target audience. For example if they were targeting teenagers they will allocate more money for online advertising and electronic advertising in general, because it is widely known that teenagers spend a lot of their time using electronic devices. Online advertising can be relatively cheap, for example, they could create a Facebook page or twitter account which is free. Films also almost always have a website, which will give the audience extra information, sneak previews and often exciting games or bonus features. Doing this will raise excitement. This means that they will probably tell their friend and therefore increase brand awareness. ‘Paranormal Activity: The marked ones’ have done this. On their film website there is a feature called ‘experience the fear’ on this you walk around a house not knowing what is going to happen next. It is incredibly fun and realistic meaning that it will without a doubt draw in an audience.

Another example of a recent viral
campaign was one which was done for ‘Carrie’. For this the producers created a
video that targeted random people on the streets. They set up a telekinetic scene
using clever engineering to make a chairs, books and even people fly. The
majority of the café was full with actors however when enough genuine customers
were in the shop the scene begun.
As you can see from the video hits, the video shocked and
amused many people. Through word of mouth the video eventually became
considerably famous.
It is important to have a unified identity for your film.
This means that you have to portray your film in the same way through all kinds
of advertising, so that the audience completely understand what your film is
about.
Insidious is a good example of this. The colour schemes all
match up, and using magazine covers and posters they were able to introduce two
of the characters. Both characters appear possessed/evil in some sort of way. This
is how the distributors need them to look in order to draw in their target
audience.
It is obvious that reviews help to sell films. Distributers have to create premiere nights in order to gain important reviews. Many journalists will be invited to these so that they can spread the word from a professional point of view. These reviews will be helpful before the release of the film but also afterwards. Certain quotes will often feature on the DVD cover and also the average star rating. Consumers will take these into consideration before buying a product therefor a good rating is necessary.
