Halloween
1). The start of Halloween exemplifies common conventional technical codes of the horror genre by using point of view shots, e.g through the monsters eyes. Another factor is the use of a hand-held camera and the music and sound effects used to create tension.
2). The features within the setting of Halloween were: Night time, Halloween, Suburben estate, Abandoned House's and mental institutions. These settings all fit in with the horror genre as they allow people to hide easily; suggests that people are suffering from insanity and can be dangerous and that there's alot of people to be killed.
3). In the early scenes of Halloween we see alot of iconography of innocence: subtle hints at Laurie being a virgin; children, books, school girls, a bullied little boy, and even the suggestion of eating popcorn and watching films instead of going out. This suggests that there will be a binary opposition of Good vs Evil.
4). Halloween had a massive imapct on the media industry. It was cheap to make, made lots of profit and left with an oppurtunity for sequels. This also influenced other directors to create their own ''Slasher'' films.
5). Films which followed in Halloweens footsteps were: Friday the 13th, Nightmare on Elm Street, graduation day and many more.
6). There were four plot rules of the ''slasher'' film sub-genre when Halloween begun. These were:
- A traumatic event at the beginning creating a psychopathic killer.
- A specific anniversery or event causes the killer to come back.
- The killer then stalks and kills irresponible teens.
- Then finally the final, usually androgynous girl survives, but the killer is never dead.
7) Laurie is portrayed as being androgynous within Halloween. This is because: she has a unisex name; she is boyish in stance, walk and tone of voice; virginal; she covers herself up; and also fights back. All these features are what keeps Laurie alive throughout the film.
8). Alot of people describe Halloween as haveing a 'reactionary sexual agenda'. This was suggested because, Laurie, who is a innocent virgin, survives no matter how many attempts there were at her death, whereas the sexually active teens were all murdered. However the director, John Carpenter, denies this suggestion and says that the teens who were murdered were killed because they were distracted and not paying attention to the world/life around them. Whereas Laurie was always aware on here surroundings. This is clear at the beggining of the film when Laurie understands and knows she is being followed by Mike, and the other two girls are completely oblivious.
9). There are two interpretations as to why Mike Myers kills his sister at the beggining of Halloween. The first one being that Mike misunderstood the actions of his sister and her boyfriend having sex, and therefore carries out an immitation with a knife. The other being that Mike was just 'Purely and simply evil' as repaeted severel times by Dr.Lumis throughout the film.
